The Peristaltic Shot - a mechanical precision shot pouring device
This device comprises a mechanically driven peristaltic pump which pulls liquor from a bottle into a graduated separatory funnel serving as a measuring device, after which a precisely measured shot can be deposited into a glass. The pump body consists of five cantilevered arms bearing rollers which compress a soft silicone tube. As the rollers travel clockwise around the housing, they create vacuum inside the tube and draw liquid up from the bottle. A handcrank below the pump housing is limited to clockwise turning with a one-way bearing hidden inside the stem.

A low-poly faceted chassis of rods creates a frame for the salvaged motor and flexible shaft which drives a rotating array of 7 four-bar linkages carrying river stones in an expanding and contracting pathway suspended in space.
The Manhattan Project Cocktail Machine
Переглядів 8836 років тому
A mechanical Manhattan cocktail machine! I made this during an Artist Residency at Autodesk's Pier 9 facility in San Francisco in 2014. It's chassis and most parts are stainless steel, with 3D printed parts and some lab glass to give it a chemistry experiment theme. Mechanically, there is a single crank input that drives a cam shaft, which activates the three ingredients (it's hard to see the b...

This cocktail machine was a commission project to produce a device that travels in a suitcase and pours a Gin & Tonic. It features a single crank that drives a worm gear. On the axle with the worm gear are two yoked cranks that activate the gin bottle, then the tonic bottle. The yokes have dwells that allow the bottle to return to their start positions and stay until the next round. Finally, a ...

Kinetic Sculpture by Benjamin Cowden. This piece has four disc-shaped cages rotating on a large ring gear. Concurrently with the ring gear, a crank turns in the center of the machine, which pushes four racks through sleeves behind the cages. The pinions attached to the cage axles are spun one way and then the other as the crank spins in different time to the ring gear.

A wall-mounted mechanical sculpture. A small AC motor drives a crank, turning a ratchet disc using pawls. This motion drives an arm back and forth with a small figure attached. At the end of each arc, the figure turns around and proceeds in the other direction.

A brief studio shot of a mechanical sculpture made using beach stones, a motor, and an organic frame built with steel rods. The motor transmits motion using a flexible shaft, which drives a worm attached to the geared assembly. Each stone is attached to the assembly with a four-bar linkage that drives it in an arc as the entire assembly rotates slowly. Better video on the way!

Tiny Planet

A 3D printed mechanical sculpture. The top dome drives a planetary gear that spins the opposite direction, carrying the "petal gears" around the perimeter. Two of the petal gears are driven by bevel gears underneath the planetary gear (the driving bevel gear is integral to the chassis). These two driven petal gears drive the remaining six, causing the entire surface of the machine to move.
Concentric Pendula

This machine was built as a mobile exhibit for the CuriOdyssey Museum at Coyote Point in Burlingame California. The idea is classic: pendula which weigh the same but are closer or further from their fulcrum will swing at different rates, and when you put a series of them in line, some wonderful patterns emerge. This is obviously a much more complex illustration of the principle. Each of the dis...

Inspired by the motion of a jellyfish, I built this piece using the tooth of an excavation machine as its base. Above that, a series of mechanisms carries the operators input through a flywheel and several miter gears until it reaches the heart of the machine: the double offset rotating piston. This pison forces the seven umbrella-like arms to spin as they extend and contract, each with a shall...
A Small Force
Переглядів 3 тис.10 років тому
One of the things that makes me feel good about the world around me is gravity. It is a very weak force, and yet every body of matter in space exerts gravitational force on every other body in space. That means you and I. We are pulling, at each other, at the planets, stars, rocks, trees, gaseous clouds. Everything. So I wanted to make something that was, in a vague way, about gravity. Input fo...

This kinetic sculpture was created entirely from scavenged trash during my residency at Recology San Francisco. The sail structure hops up and down as though trying to take off, but never quite leaving the ground. The base is a purple bowling ball, emerging from which is a light structure with a copy-machine fan on top. A sail made from a patchwork of discarded kites, attached to a series of be...

Its also the exact same mechanism as a f#@king machine minus the joint that allows the output to remain linear... You naughty naughty... My question is, while this gets the steam/industrial punk cosplayers (those concerned more with aesthetics than actual functional aesthetics (ie destroy some antique watches and movements to get some gears to glue together instead of putting the functioning gear train on display, or more simply 'look, photoshop gear paint brush effect IRL, so steam punk!') rocks off (hehe rocks, because booze), uh ... I really cant think of a way to phrase this ... why? Is shaking shakers that much of an awkward thing? Is there some preference for decoupling the feel of the shaker from the mixologist? Was it simply a creative juices attack while you happened to be near a pile of scrap (which is entirely valid. I don't care if it has a purpose, i care if a random attack of creativity is masked by innovative avant garde inspiration (basically Im vastly more perturbed by effective lies dressing up a brain dropping, than id ever be by the simple truth of "I glanced at a pile of metal, went 'hrmm', and pooped this thing out"))? I... just don't really see the point... Thus the validity of 'randomly pooped it out' Although I do see the potential of changing out the fly wheel to output shaft connector for a slotted slide so that the geometry thus output characteristics can be easily changed (with a cam lock bolt, per se), and test how various offsets from the center effect different cocktails (quick more violent shaking, vs long gentle 'sloshing'). Yeah, sure, there are books that say this and that about shaking technique....but this can gather empirical data (granted about a subjective subject. Screw opinions of others, if drinks are meant to be enjoyed then the only correct way to make one is the way the drinker enjoys it. Period. No exceptions. If someone enjoys lime and mexican pisswater beer, then put a lime in their corona and serve it to them with a smile. If they like their martini beat to shit while the bartender thinks of a broken bottle of vermouth, serve it to them with a smile. No one is allowed to tell you the way you like the things you imbibe is wrong. They're not drinking it, you are. Screw their opinions. If they only like you because you drink your cocktails the correct way, they dont like you, they just like glueing gears to cheap top hats. Sorry, not sorry). Even if the subjective (double blind crossed with a misinformation testing method) data it gathers points to less impact on the drinks than the presumptions of the drinker. Data is data!
Put a gear thread where the red tag is. To match a cylinder housing.

♥.♥ Nice Mechanism.
I would love to see build plans for this. Any chance I could get some?
You started with a model, you welded to another model and at the end it's another model, you have a little spin around 😂😂😂
Danny Elfman's "Breakfast Machine" should be the soundtrack to this video.
How do I buy this for my boyfriend. I’m trying to find the maker to get one!!!
hi Benjamin Cowden, What do you think about making me a custom belt buckle if yes plz let me know and tell me about the pricing?
Hi Ben! I would love to have one of these made and shipped to Amsterdam. Please let me know if you're interested in helping us :-) Cheers M
Hi Marjolein! This is definitely possible. Could you email me at ben@twentysevengears to discuss? Thanks!
Hey, I am contacting you from Exploration Production Inc., the producer of Discovery Channel’s flagship science program, Daily Planet. I'd like to feature this video on our program. Could you contact me at blake.glasbergen@bellmedia.ca
But a shot glass is its own measuring device, and it didn't even fill that one up!? That's not right at all!
Hipsters with too much money.
We're gonna need a bigger shot glass....
After all that you use a plastic up!?????? Oh no!
Oh man oh man. This might just be my favorite.
how many layers of irony is this on?
Where did you do your MFA, and what in?
Absolutely beautiful mate
This is great. Bravo.
Excellent job!
I just love you work! reminds me of rebecca horn (my highest compliment as shes my favourite ever)
Love it, Ben! Cheers!
I love the cucumber dispenser! Its awesome Ben :)
looks great
yeah I'm sure this was just made to lick lollipops...
"It's the things you can't change that shape you" does that mean the best way to deal with the things you can change is to crack the boredom machine???
I love this, and I'm looking forward to the better video. I hope it shows greater detail into the actual operation and we can see the gear and linkage working together. I think this set up might work for a project I'm building for my Christmas display this year. Keep up the great work.
Es un imvento genial en forma de reloj en movimiento
Awesome stuff, Ben! Did you make those worm gears?

Fantastic! Great stuff, Ben! I'm curious to see where this ends up!
Interesting idea.

It's a question many of us ask.
how did i get to this part of youtube?
i want that as a clock hand :D
ended up on the wrong part of youtube again
You are correct about the planetary gear. I've changed the description. The title of the video is the title of the piece.
no one really gives a shit
looks like its made out of an old clutch plate from a dirt bike or motorcycle
Thats why he went to art school..
